Ciclismo Racing’s coach, Jeremy Norris, has the race report from this past weekend’s Colorado High School Cycling League’s races from the Haymaker Classic in Eagle, CO.
49 NoCo athletes made the trip over the divide to race in Eagle. Fossil Ridge had 7, Poudre had 5, Fort Collins had 9, and Rocky Mountain had 28. In total, 369 kids took part in the Platte region races (one of four region races taking place during the weekend).
This past weekend our NoCo athletes took on the third race of their season, the Haymaker Classic in Eagle. The classic course with punchy climbs and ripping fast descents present an opportunity for the athletes to test their trail speed and fitness in a high speed race.
Rain leading up to the race gave our athletes some incredible race conditions without the normal clouds of Eagle dust. NoCo athletes competing for Rocky Mountain, Fort Collins, Fossil, and Poudre high schools brought home six podiums, one win, and a plethora of incredible rides and accomplished goals.
In Varsity Girls, our NoCo athletes put three in the top 10 with Korryne Collins in 3rd for Rocky Mountain and Alaina Smith in 4th with her Fort Collins teammate Issabell Troxell in 8th. Alaina improved her place on the podium by one spot from the previous race in Steamboat!
Varsity boys our top finishers were Abe Cooley(Fort Collins) in 13th followed by Zachary Watkins(Fossil) in 15th. Zachary improved greatly on his 23rd in Steamboat last week!
JV girls saw Darcie Henley from Rocky Mountain ride to a strong 8th place with Samantha Mackay 11th for Fort Collins.
In JV Boys, Lachlan Morrison landed on the podium once again in 3rd for Rocky Mountain. Liam Massing-Vincent, Poudre, cracked the top ten in 7th place with Poudre teammate Paul Olson just behind in 10th.
The Sophomore Boys race saw Shane McDill from Rocky Mountain in 11th with Grant Girdler(Fossil) in 13th.
Our NoCo Freshman Girls rode strong with Emmaline Jarnevich finishing 2nd for Rocky Mountain and Greyson Spruell(Poudre) in 11th.
The Freshman Boys put on a master class with Joe Zukouski from Rocky Mountain putting a gap into his competitors for a commanding win and teammate Hudson Collins holding off the rest of the field for 2nd place.
In two weeks our athletes will race their final race in the Platte Conference in Nathrop Oct 5th before qualified riders head to Glenwood Springs for State Championships Oct 19-20.

About the Colorado High School Cycling League and how it works in NoCo
- The Colorado High School Cycling League consists of teams from the Rocky Mountains, with participating schools in Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
- The league is divided into four regions. NoCo kids race in the Platte region, which includes athletes from three states and 18 high schools/composite metro areas.
- NoCo kids race for their high schools: Rocky Mountain, Fort Collins, Poudre, and Fossil Ridge. If they do not attend one of these schools for whatever reason (home school, not in PSD, etc.), they race for whatever high school is closest to their home address. They can live in other cities and race for Fort Collins high schools if their high school doesn’t have a team.
- All NoCo athletes race and train under the Ciclismo Racing umbrella. Ciclismo organizes practices, pays coaches, purchases clothing, manages race day operations, develops training plans, and does a litany of other things. Sendtown Bike Club no longer has a high school mountain bike program.
- Ciclsimo Racing has 65 athletes and 14 coaches.
- There are boys and girls varsity, junior varsity, sophomore, and freshman races.
- Platte Region races occur in Frisco, Eagle, Steamboat, and Nathrop, and the State Championships are in Glenwood Springs.
- During the opening weekend, over 1400 high school athletes participated in races in Frisco and Leadville.
