A local cyclist was killed and a motorcyclist injured Sunday afternoon in a collision on Larimer County Road 38E near Horsetooth Mountain Park, according to witnesses and investigators.

The crash occurred around 1:21 p.m., as both the cyclist and motorcyclist were traveling eastbound, climbing toward the park near Milner Mountain Ranch  (YGR- the posted speed limit in that area is 45mph, and the left-hand curve is very slight). According to investigators, the motorcyclist passed another motorcycle as they approached a left-hand curve. The motorcyclist was unable to negotiate the curve and drove onto the right shoulder, striking the cyclist. The bicycle landed in the grassy area off the right side of the road. The motorcycle continued eastbound, traveled off the left side of the road, and began to tumble before coming to rest.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The 61-year-old motorcyclist, who was riding a Honda CMX1100, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The road was closed for several hours as the victims were attended to and the crash was investigated. The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the incident.

I will announce the victim’s name once the family has given permission to do so.

I extend my deepest sympathy to the friends and family of the victim, as well as to those who were first on the scene. If there is anything we as a community can do to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Article updated at 11:59 a.m. on 04/28/2025 to include the motorcyclist’s age, condition at the time of the crash, type of motorcycle, and confirmation of witness accounts via the Colorado State Patrol.
