Mike Williams rode his 2010 Specialized Shiv to a 5th place in the Masters 50-54 National championships last month with a blistering pace of 45:25.  His time was good enough for 11th place out of all categories.  Not only is Mike one of the fastest Masters time trialists, he’s one of the fastest in the state at any age.  His 2015 State Championship ride would have put him in 4th place in the pros. If you’ve ever been in a break with him, you know he produces and enormous amount of power and provides very little draft. His time trial position is remarkable. He looks like a rocket going down the road.

Here’s a look at his modified 2010 Specialized Shiv. You’ll notice his aero bar extensioins are very custom.  Here’s what he had to say about them “I have had three sets of custom bars.  First I melted off the un-adjustable stock extensions and modified some carbon HED Lazy-S extensions to get a fit that was somewhat like my old one on my Transition.  That was a ton of work and didn’t work very well.  Next I had James Frames in Boulder weld me up different set of extensions that worked well, but were not very clean.  Then I had Brian Rodriguez ( who worked at the North Peloton location) weld up some bars I bent and cut in my garage. They worked well until one cracked.   Now I am building the 4-6th iterations in my garage.  They will be an aluminum bar wrapped in carbon fiber.  I will make one set of bars to replace what I have.  I also want to experiment with using a 1X11 gearing next year, so I will make a set that make my hand position narrower.  The third set will be a little higher and longer, just to see if that works better (cause they dropped all the positioning rules for Masters last year).”
