Weld County Driver Sentenced in Cyclist’s Death

A Weld County woman was sentenced today, June 13, 2025, to five years in prison after fatally striking a bicyclist and fleeing the scene in Greeley, Colorado, in 2023. Ana Caren Romero hit Michael Wallen while he was riding his bike on 8th Avenue and left without stopping or calling for help. After the crash, Romero drove through a McDonald’s drive-through with her 5-year-old son in the car before eventually returning home. Following an investigation that linked Romero’s vehicle to the crash, she pled guilty to vehicular homicide and was sentenced by Weld County District Court Judge Anita Crowther, underscoring the serious consequences of her actions.

One Mile to Go on Poudre River Trail

The long-awaited final link in the Poudre River Trail is one step closer to becoming reality. According to Zac Wiebe with Larimer County Natural Resources, CDOT has issued the notice to proceed to bid, clearing the way for construction to begin as soon as this summer. The project is expected to wrap up after the 2025 irrigation season, when the bridge over the Greeley #2 Canal is installed.

Ollie’s Ride for Change

There are a ton of cool events either wrapping up or kicking off this week (I'll mention them in a bit) but I wanted to take a moment to highlight and encourage you to attend one in particular that is near and dear to my heart; Ollie's Ride for Change is happening at CSU on Saturday. We will meet for a fun day to celebrate Ollie and advocate for safer streets. The day will include bike decorating contests and giveaways, free helmets, face painting and other family-friendly activities, a bike rodeo to teach children essential cycling skills, a bike expo featuring community groups and cycling safety resources, advocacy speakers discussing legislation to combat distracted driving, food trucks, and more.

2025 Collegiate Road Nats Results

The Colorado State University Cycling Team delivered a strong showing at the 2025 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships last weekend (May 2–4, 2025) in Madison. Racing in the Club Division, the Rams earned multiple top-10 finishes, including second-place results in both the men’s and women’s team time trials, a second-place overall finish in the Road Team Omnium and the  WIN in the Year-long Team Omnium (cumulative points for the entire school year, across disciplines).
