CSU’s Rees York gives us the play by play from State’s perspective.

Road Race Course:

This 16.5 mile course featured rolling terrain with very little flat sections. There were two main features of the course. There was a 300 ft power climb, that pitched upwards of 10% about halfway through the course, and a 0.5 mile kicker to the finish. The kicker to the finish came just after a 2.5 mile false flat/uphill, making the finish especially brutal.

Mens Road Race:

The 120ish Men completed 4 laps of the course, totaling 65 miles. There was an early attack from Yale that lasted a lap, but the fireworks really started when Chaz Hogenauer (CSU) followed a move by CU Boulder’s Eric Brunner. Chaz and two CU Boulder riders went off the front with 2 laps to go. A chase group of 6 formed with Ben O’Malley (CSU), while a reduced main field of 20 riders including freshman Tayne Andrade (CSU) kept the chase in their sights. The three in the break kept a 1 minute gap to the chase, who had another two minutes back to the main field for the majority of the last two laps. Chaz attacked the two Boulder riders at 3km togo, and was caught on the final hill to the line.

Womens Road Race:

The 70ish Women completed 3 laps of the course, totalling 49.5 miles. CSU Teammates Korissa Straub and Catie Jungmann set the pace on the front the first lap and a half, setting up Mel Beale and 7 others to escape the second time up the main climb of the day. The breakaway of 8 held a 1-2 minute gap over the main field for most of the rest of the race, with the main field gaining time back on the last lap. The last time up the main climb, the breakaway shattered, causing Mel Beale to fall back to the reduced main field of 20ish riders for the finish.

Team Time Trial:

The out and back, 19 Mile Time Trial course was in the valley of De Beque. It featured a climb in the middle of the out and back, so you ended up climbing both sides of it. One the way back into town, riders deviated from the course by taking a right turn up a 1 mile climb to the finish. You could have up to four starters, with time being taken on the front wheel of the third rider. Our Mens team included Ben O’Malley, Chaz Hogenauer, Tayne Andrade, and Maxl Freeman, while our Womens team included Mel Beale, Catie Jungmann, and Korissa Straub.

Criterium Course:

This criterium is a fast, 6 corner race in downtown Grand Junction. All of the corners were nice and wide, except for one where you turned right onto a narrow street with some decorative cobbles. The final corner was 300m from the finish line, making it a long sprint if you went early out of that corner.

Mens Criterium:

The Mens race saw 4 of our riders tow the line for 80 minutes of racing. A very fast start saw the field strung out immediately. All of our riders made it up to the front in the first few laps to help control the race. Andrew Castagneri (CSU) took the reins immediately and kept breaks in check, before crashing hard on crash corner (the narrow turn with cobbles) about 15 minutes into the race. He wounded up with a seperated shoulder, but is otherwise okay. Air Force had the first serious attack, going up the road with 3 others for 5 laps, which was brought back by Ian Whaley (CSU). Chaz Hogenauer attacked immediately after they were brought back with Univeristy of Nebraska to form a two man break. They waited for more to join them, and then took off when 7 bridged up to them. This attack split the race into three groups, with Chaz in the breakaway (9 riders), Ian in the Main pack (18 Riders), and Maxl in the following pack (25 Riders). Maxl’s group got pulled from the course with 10 min to go, which he won the sprint for. Ian kept riders from joining the breakaway and sprinted to 4th in his group. Chaz attempted to breakaway from his group with 5 laps to go with another rider, but they got caught and Chaz sprinted to 5th on the day!

Womens Criterium:

The Womens race had 70 minutes of racing. Mel Beale got a call up as the RMCCC conference champion. A third of the way through the race a group of 8 pushed the pace and broke away including Mel. Kori and Catie fell off the pace during this surge and eventually were pulled from the race. The lead group of 8 steadily increased their gap on the field until 8 laps to go when a crash took out 5 of the 8 riders. Mel didn’t get caught up in the crash, and 4 of the 5 ladies got back up to rejoin them after visiting the wheel pit. The group managed to stay away to the line, with Mel taking second in a very close sprint to the line.
