On February 12, 2023 at approximately 12:51 p.m., Fort Collins Police were notified of an injury collision between a bicycle and a vehicle at the intersection of South Lemay Avenue and Centennial Road. When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult male, who was the cyclist with serious injuries. The cyclist was transported to an area hospital for further medical treatment. Due to the severity of the collision, the Fort Collins Police CRASH (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to take over the investigation.
The investigation to this point has revealed that a 2006 Honda CR-V which was driven by an adult male was traveling northbound on Lemay Avenue. The cyclist was on Centennial Road and preparing to cross Lemay Avenue. The cyclist began to cross Lemay Avenue going west when he collided with the Honda CR-V. There is a stop sign on Centennial Road for traffic before entering onto Lemay Avenue, meaning that the Honda CR-V had the right of way.
Northbound Lemay Avenue was closed at both Centennial Road and Swallow Road while investigators processed the scene. While officers were processing the scene, they were made aware that the cyclist passed away due to his injuries. The driver of the Honda CR-V was uninjured. Northbound Lemay Avenue was closed for approximately 4 hours while investigators processed the scene.
“Our thoughts are with all affected by today’s incident. We recognize the lasting impact something like this can have on families. This is yet another somber reminder for all roadway users to be aware of their surroundings, and ensuring it is safe when entering the road,” said Sergeant Mike Avrech who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team.
