The High School MTB season with the Colorado League kicked off this past Saturday in Leadville for the Platte Region teams of NoCo and Wyo. Races were also held on Sunday in Leadville and in Frisco over the weekend for the other three high school regions in Colorado totaling 1,515 athletes! Coach Jeremy Norris submitted the following race report.
The NoCo teams hit the ground running with Page Ligget(Independant, Berthoud, Ciclismo) dominating Sophomore boys with Nate Lowe(Horsetooth Composite, SendTown) snagging second behind. Caden Paroz(Rocky) squeezed onto the Sophomore podium in 5th. Korynne Collins(Independant, Fort Collins, Ciclismo) crushed her first ever high school race to win Freshman Girls by over a minute.
Sophomore Girls saw Isabel Troxell(Horsetooth Composite) finish in a strong second and Olivia Helgerson in 6th. The Sophomore Boys had two more athletes in the top 10 after Page, Nate, and Caden on the podium with Max Abernathy(Rocky) in 6th and Zachary Watkins(Horsetooth Composite) in 9th.
Freshman Boys found Rowan Christensen in 6th in his first high school race.
Alaina Smith and Kate Miller, both Fort Collins High School, finished 6th and 9th in Varsity Girls.
Cade Shortridge and Brodie Morrison from Poudre finished 6th and 8th in Varsity Boys with Abe Cooley(FoCo) and Jake McDill(Rocky) rounding out the top 10.
Alexa Nachold(Rocky) snagged a top 10 with 7th in JV Girls, showing up her teammates Kannon Johnson and Perry Anderson who finished 10th and 11th in JV boys.
Three NoCo programs landed on the podium in the team competition with Rocky in 3rd for Division-2 and Fort Collins and Poudre in 2nd and 3rd in Division-3 behind our friends from Spearfish, SD. Kelly Walsch, WY and Laramie, WY finished 4th and 5th in Division-3. Horsetooth Composite snagged 4th in Division-2.
[note: divisions are determined by size of team. A D1 team will have 15 scoring riders from their top finishes for the team competition, D2 9 scoring riders, D3 5 scoring riders.]
