The City of Fort Collins is moving bike registration to Bike Index, a nationally recognized nonprofit database used by thousands of cities, universities, and bike shops worldwide to help recover stolen bikes and reunite them with their owners. CSU has also moved to Bike Index, creating a shared system that is searchable by the public and useful for people who have lost a bike and for those who have found one.

I’m a big fan of Bike Index. The only reason Seth and I were able to return that stolen Pivot was because the owner registered it on BI.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. The City of Fort Collins is transitioning its longtime in house bike registration system to Bike Index, a nationally recognized bicycle registration database used by thousands of communities and universities worldwide. This change coincides with Colorado State University’s migration to Bike Index, creating a unified, community wide platform for bike and mobility device registration.

The new Fort Collins Bike Index registration form is now online at Bike Registration. Existing bikes registered with the City are being automatically migrated into the new system for owners who provided an email address. Those who registered with only a phone number will be contacted directly for assistance.

“This move to Bike Index modernizes Fort Collins’ bike registration system and makes it easier for people to protect their bikes and scooters,” said Lauren Nagle, Active Modes Specialist for the City of Fort Collins. “By aligning with CSU and local bike shops, we are creating a seamless system that works across the entire community.”

Key updates include:

Expanded registration
For the first time, residents may register e scooters, e skateboards and other mobility devices in addition to bikes.

Self serve, free registration
Fort Collins residents can register at any time for free on Bike Index without relying on City staff.

Integration with bike shops
Bike Index connects with point of sale systems at local bike shops, streamlining the registration process. Bike shop support for registration will roll out over the next several months.

City and CSU coordination
CSU students, staff and faculty should register through CSU’s Bike Index portal to allow for regular bike parking on campus. For off campus theft or recovery, the City can still access CSU’s database.

Automatic transition for existing registrants
The City’s previous bike registration system has been migrated into Bike Index. Those who registered in the old system are already included in the new one.

Community members can learn more and register their bikes at the City’s Transportation Projects Fair on Friday, Feb. 6 from 6-9 p.m. at The Center for Creativity (200 Mathews St.).
