I reached out to city leadership to see where we’re at in the bike park process and to learn what the next steps are. Ginny Sawyer, Project and Policy Manager with the City Manager’s Office, sent the following information.

“City Council adopted a Priority to “Develop a Hughes site Master Plan.”  Priorities and future updates can be found here: https://www.fcgov.com/council/  (*see priorities below) Part of the Council direction included looking at bike park feasibility across the community to ensure the City is looking at all options and to ensure that we hear from all voices and interests.

There will be a work session on this topic June 11, 2024 and previous outreach and findings will be included in those materials. Staff recognizes that this is a priority of this current Council and will ensure that a plan will be brought by mid-2025.

I realize this timeframe may feel long and this is a large parcel with a lot of community interest and the City and Council want to ensure that plan development is an inclusive process.”

Every two years, following a Council election, the newly seated Council identifies priorities and confirms strategic direction.

9. Develop a Hughes site master plan
In accordance with the voter-approved ballot measure, the City acquired the 164-acre Hughes site in summer 2023. After conducting initial general public outreach and identifying conflicting interests and desires, Council will engage in an inclusive process to develop a site plan for future use.

Hughes property timeline as of May 31, 2024.

  • January 2021 City Council unanimously adopted an updated Parks & Recreation Master Plan. The public engagement for that plan showed strong support for a bike park.
  • May 2021 City Council rezones the Hughes site as Public Open Lands.
  • February 6th, 2023, Hughes Survey Closes with strong support for a bike park.
  • February 24th, 2023, a second Hughes Survey Closes with strong support for a bike park.
  • March 2023, Seventy people, mostly children, speak in support of a bike park during Council meeting.
  • March 2023, the City Council reviewed community feedback, project report aligned with community desire for a bike park and discussed the project’s next steps at a Work Session.
  • June 2023 City completes purchase of Hughes Stadium site from CSU for $12.5 million.
  • June 2023-June 2024 no further outreach or updates.
